Point Load Tester

A Point Load Tester is used to measure the strength values of a rock specimen or concrete in geotechnical engineering. It applies a concentrated force to a small area of the material and measures the resulting deformation or failure load. This type of testing can provide valuable information about the load-bearing capacity of rock formations or concrete structures, which is crucial for engineering projects such as building foundations, tunnels, and bridges. New rigid design load frame with hydraulic loading ram actuated by hand pump. A ruler attached to the frame allows for direct measuring of specimen diameter. The apparatus applied a high-accuracy load cell and digital fine-resolution reading control unit. Standard

ASTM D5731 is an ASTM International standard that provides guidelines for testing the determination of the point load strength index of rock and application to rock strength classifications.

Test Procedure of Point Load Tester

  1. Preparation of Specimen: The rock or concrete specimen to be tested is prepared by cutting or drilling to obtain a flat surface. The specimen is usually cylindrical in shape with a specified diameter.

  2. Setting Up the Tester: The point load tester is set up on a stable surface. The hydraulic loading ram is connected to the frame, and the digital control unit is turned on.

  3. Placing the Specimen: The prepared specimen is placed on the lower anvil of the point load tester. Care is taken to ensure that the specimen is positioned centrally and securely on the anvil.

  4. Applying Load: The hydraulic loading ram is then used to apply a concentrated force to the specimen at a specified rate. The force is applied until the specimen fractures or deforms, and the maximum load applied is recorded.

  5. Measuring Deformation or Failure Load: During the test, the deformation or failure load of the specimen is measured using the digital control unit. This measurement is crucial for determining the strength characteristics of the material.

  6. Recording Results: The maximum load applied and any relevant data, such as specimen diameter and deformation, are recorded for analysis.

  7. Analysis: The results of the test are analyzed to determine the point load strength index (Is(50)), which is a measure of the material's strength under point loading conditions.
