Rapid Moisture Tester

Rapid Moisture Tester is a device used to quickly determine the moisture content of a substance, including sand, soil, fine aggregate, or other construction materials. This device utilizes the rapid drying method, allowing for on-the-spot measurements of moisture levels. The device typically works by heating a sample of the material to evaporate the moisture content and then measuring the weight loss to calculate the moisture content percentage. 

The procedure involves the reaction between water and calcium carbide when mixed, a gas is produced. The gas is directly proportional to the amount of water present in the sample and results in a percentage moisture range of 0-25% & 0-50%.

Standard

  • BS 812: British Standard for testing aggregates in construction. Covers methods for determining properties like particle size, shape, and resistance to crushing. 
  • ASTM D4944: ASTM International standard for determining in-place density of soil in the field. Uses nuclear gauges or other methods to measure the density of compacted soils.
  • AASHTO T217: American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) standard. Determines in-place density and unit weight of soil and soil-aggregate in the field, using methods similar to ASTM D4944.

Test Procedure of Rapid Moisture Tester

  1. Equipment Check: Ensure the Rapid Moisture Tester is in proper working condition.
  2. Calibration: Calibrate the tester according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  3. Sample Collection: Obtain a representative sample of the material, ensuring it is homogenous.
  4. Sample Preparation: Weigh the sample accurately and record its initial weight.
  5. Testing Chamber Setup: Place the sample in the testing chamber, ensuring even distribution.
  6. Start Test: Begin the rapid drying process as per the tester's specifications.
  7. Moisture Measurement: Measure the moisture content after the rapid drying cycle is complete.
  8. Recording Results: Record the final weight of the sample and the moisture content.
  9. Calculation: Calculate the moisture content using the formula. Moisture Content (%)=Initial Weight - Final WeightInitial
  10. Quality Assessment: Assess the material's moisture level for suitability in its intended application.
