Vebe Consistometer (BS)
Vebe Consistometer (BS) is used to measure the consistency and density of roller-compacted concrete, which determines the ease with which concrete can be transported, placed, and compacted. This test method is a variation of the simple slump test and subjects the concrete to vibration after removal from the slump cone. The time taken for the concrete to be recompacted is taken as a measure of workability. The small vibrating table operates at a fixed amplitude and frequency, and in the test, a plastic disc is placed into contact with the upper surface of the concrete. The test is completed when the lower surface of the disc has been completely coated with cement grout. Meets BS 1881/104 Test Method for consistency and density determinations of roller-compacted concrete. Can be used on both laboratory and filed-prepared mixes.
Features of Vebe Consistometer (BS)
- Measurement of Level of Workability and Consistency: The device measures the time taken for the concrete sample to undergo a specific degree of deformation under vibration. This measurement provides a quick indication of the consistency and workability of fresh concrete.

Standards
- BS 1881/104: This is a British Standard that pertains to the testing of hardened concrete. Specifically, it deals with the determination of the compressive strength of concrete cores.
- EN 12350/3: This is a European Standard concerning testing fresh concrete. More specifically, it focuses on the testing of hardened concrete in structures. Part 3 of this standard specifically covers the testing of hardened concrete: Compressive strength of test specimens.
- UNI 9419: This is an Italian standard related to the testing of concrete. It likely covers various aspects of concrete testing, but without more context, it's difficult to pinpoint its exact focus.
Test Procedure of Vebe Consistometer (BS)
- Equipment Check: Ensure that the Vebe Consistometer apparatus is in good working condition and properly calibrated.
- Sample Preparation: Prepare a representative sample of fresh concrete according to the project specifications.
- Vebe Table Setup: Set up the Vebe table with the appropriate mould, ensuring it is clean and free from any residues.
- Sample Placement: Place the fresh concrete sample into the mould on the Vebe table.
- Initial Measurement: Set the timer and start the Vebe table. Record the time it takes for the concrete to reach a specified level of consistency.
- Recording Vebe Time: Record the Vebe time, which represents the time taken for the concrete to undergo a specified amount of vertical movement.
- Repeat Testing: Conduct multiple tests with fresh samples to ensure consistency and reliability of results.
- Data Analysis: Analyse the Vebe time data to assess the workability of the concrete. Shorter Vebe times typically indicate higher workability.
- Comparisons with Standards: Compare the obtained Vebe time with project specifications or industry standards to ensure the concrete meets the required workability criteria.
- Documentation: Document the test results, including the Vebe time, any observations, and details of the concrete mix.
- Clean-Up: Clean the Vebe table and mould thoroughly between tests to prevent any residue from affecting subsequent measurements.
