Product Description

Point Load Tester is a portable device used to determine the strength values of a rock specimen both in the geotechnical engineering field and in the laboratory. It applies a concentrated force (point load) to a small area of the material and measures the load required to cause failure, typically by fracturing or breaking the specimen. New rigid design load frame with hydraulic loading ram actuated by hand pump. A ruler attached to the frame allows for direct measuring of specimen diameter. The apparatus applied a high-accuracy load cell & fine resolution reading control unit.

Measurements of the applied force and specimen dimensions are taken to derive the point load strength index (Is(50)). This index serves as a dependable indicator of the specimen's equivalent uniaxial compressive strength. Engineers and geologists rely on this data for efficient and precise geological characterization and engineering design decisions, enhancing the effectiveness of various projects such as construction, mining, and infrastructure development.

Testing Procedure for Diametrical, Axial, and Irregular Lump Tests

1. Diametral Test:

  • Purpose: The diametral test, also known as the Brazilian test, is used to determine the tensile strength or indirect tensile strength of rock specimens.
  • Procedure: In this test, a cylindrical rock specimen is subjected to diametral loading. A compressive load is applied diametrically across the specimen until it fails, typically along a diametrical plane. Ensure that the specimen dimensions meet the requirements for the test configuration, with length/diameter (L/D) ratios greater than 1.0.
  • Analysis: The tensile strength of the rock specimen is calculated using the formula for indirect tensile strength, which relates the applied load to the failure diameter of the specimen.

2. Axial Test:

  • Purpose: The axial test, also known as the uniaxial compression test, is used to determine the compressive strength and deformation properties of rock specimens.
  • Procedure: In this test, a compressive load is applied axially (along the longitudinal axis) to a cylindrical or cubical rock specimen until it fails. Ensure that the specimen dimensions meet the requirements for the test configuration, with length/diameter (L/D) ratios between 0.3 and 1.0.
  • Analysis: The compressive strength of the rock specimen is calculated by dividing the maximum load applied during the test by the cross-sectional area of the specimen.

3. Irregular Lump Test:

  • Purpose: The irregular lump test, also known as the point load test, is used to assess the strength and deformation properties of irregularly shaped rock specimens.
  • Procedure: In this test, a concentrated load is applied to a small point on the surface of the rock specimen using a specialized point load tester apparatus. The load is gradually increased until the specimen fails. Utilize rock pieces of suitable irregular shapes when cores are not available for testing.
  • Analysis: The point load index, calculated as the ratio of the applied load to the diameter of the specimen at the point of failure, is used to characterize the rock's strength and brittleness.

4. Recording Data: Record the failure load "P" at the point of specimen failure. Take note of the dimensions and any relevant observations.

5. Strength Index Calculation (IS): Calculate the strength index (IS) using the formula: IS = P / D², where "P" represents the failure load and "D" is the distance between the two conical points.
