Mastering the Selection of Sieve Grades
Introduction to Sieve Grades

Irrespective of th eir eventual role as Compliance, Inspection, or Calibration sieves, all sieves undergo the same manufacturing process. ASTM and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) provide 3 tiers of validations or verifications for measuring the openings of the sieve and wire diameters, ensuring adherence with industry standards. Inspection and Calibration sieves typically command higher prices. Why, you might ask? Due to meticulous scrutiny of wire cloth openings and wire sizes, ensuring adherence to ASTM E11 standards, the outcome is enhanced precision, consistent validation, and a more adaptable product.
Now, let's check out th e differences between each grade in with more details:
Compliance Grade:

This tier signifies the basic level and includes a manufacturing adherence certificate with a serial number, although lacking statistical documentation. It's made using wire cloth inspected and measured in sheet rolls before being mounted and cut in each sieve frame. With 66% s tatistical confidence level, Compliance Grade sieves are suitable for applications requiring fundamental reliability and repeatability. They form the foundation of sieve usage, constituting the majority of currently employed sieves. Inspection and Calibration Grade sieves elevate Compliance sieves by subjecting them to extra measurements to meet specific needs.
Inspection Grade

In this process, a specific number of sieve openings are measured in each sieve after the cloth is installed in the frame. There exists a 99% s tatistical assurance that the variability of all apertures aligns with ASTM or ISO standards. Inspection Grade sieves are ideal for use cases where consistency is crucial. They are invaluable, especially when accuracy documentation is needed by internal or external regulations.
Calibration Grade

Calibration Grade sieves enhance precision significantly. They involve measuring about twice the number of in dividual openings compared to Inspection Grade sieves. As a result achieving a 99.73% statistical assurance that the standard deviation of these openings meets with the maximum allowed by ASTM standards. These sieves are essential when an exceptionally high level of accuracy is necessary. Calibration Grade sieves are crucial for verifying that your working sieves meet the stringent requirements of ASTM E11.
The Significance of Continuous Validation

Ensuring the ongoing accuracy of an utilized sieve is crucial. As the time goes by, wire cloth experiences stretching, shifting, sagging, and potential tearing due to aging, while abrasive materials can modify individual opening sizes. Consequently, it is imperative to institute a regular routine for re-verifying that your sieves function correctly and meet with their expected standards. On-site tests can be con ducted in various manners, or you may opt to return your sieves for re-verification to th e laboratory where they were acquired.
