UNIVERSAL TESTING MACHINES
A Universal Testing Machine (UTM) is a versatile piece of equipment that plays a vital role in practically every industry as it can run a diverse set of standard-compliant tests on a vast array of materials. The function of a UTM is to apply controlled forces to a test specimen and measure its response to mechanical stresses like tension, compression, bending, and shearing. Specialized software controls the UTM for safety and allows operators to set different machine settings.
To use a UTM machine, secure the test specimen, set desired parameters using specialized software, apply controlled forces, record data on applied force and specimen behaviour, and analyze results. The UTM records crucial data during testing, such as the applied force and the specimen's behaviour under compression or tension.
This universal testing machine is important for predicting material performance for intended applications across diverse industries. The benefits of a UTM machine include its ability to conduct v arious standard- compliant tests on diverse materials, providing essential data for designers and manufacturers to ensure material suitability and adherence to safety and quality standards.
Components of a Universal Testing Machine (UTM)
Control Panel and Software
Grip/Fixtures
When a sample is stretched apart from two ends, tensile grips are used to grip and hold still the specimens while the test is running.
Crosshead
The moving component of the testing apparatus that applies force, tensile or compression to the specimen.
Load Frame
The testing machine's main structural component, the load frame, provides support for the entire system.
Load Cell
A tool used to measure the force applied to the test subject is the load cell.
Actuator
They can be easily integrated into a variety of test configurations and are ideal for stretching and compressing tests.

Testronz Instruments offers a comprehensive range of universal testing machines. Tensile testing is perhaps one of the most simplest and straightforward way for determining the strength of variety of materials that will be used for different applications.
Universal testing machines ar e specifically designed and built for such purpose. Though it may look simple, tensile testing is more than just pulling materials apart until break to determine its tensile strength. Different materials command different requirement in characteristic, which become a key factor in determining the quality and safety of materials to be used. Hence, universal testing machines play a major role in judging the performance of materials through its simple testing methodology regardless of the materials shape, size, condition and other unique dimensions.
The function of UTM is to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of materials. The types of tests our universal testing machines can carry out include:
Pull Test
Being the most common test, the material will be placed between two clamps and sandwiched by locking the clamps tight. A specific separation speed is applied on the clamps to mo ve further away from each other, which will cause the material to distort and elongate until it breaks or fails. This will allow the following parameters to be determined :
to distort plastically. The elastic modulus is a crucial material
characteristic used in engineering to plan and forecast how structures will respond to loads.
Compression Test
This is the opposite of tensile test, instead of pulling the material apart it compresses the material until it crushed or deformed in order to determine its maximum compressive strength. Usually is done by using two plates or better known as platens, top and bottom. The material is sandwiched between the plates where compression force is applied, at a constant loading rate.
A more advanced test is determination of the material deformation at maximum force before the it is crushed or broken. This is a study of how elastic the material with respond to applied compressive force.
Peel Test
This is similar to tensile test, but used to evaluate the adhesive or bonding strength instead of tensile strength. The test involves bonding two materials together and then separating them by peeling them apart at a defined rate until it’s separated. Hence the forced required to separate the materials is measured and used to calculate the peel strength.
Bend Test
Sometimes also known as the flexural test has similar concept as the compression test, as it applies load in a compression manner. But instead of using two plates top and bottom, it has top and bottom rollers. It is used to evaluate the bending properties of longer materials, often in rectangular shape with certain thickness by how well the materials can withstand bending before break.
Puncture Test
A type of mechanical testing used to evaluate the resistance of materials such as plastics, composites, and textiles to penetration or puncture. The test involves applying a force with a pointed probe or indenter at a constant rate, which is pressed onto the flat surface material being tested. The force required to penetrate the material is measured, and the results can be used to determine the puncture strength of the material.
