  • Description

Standard: 12697-1, ASTM D2172, AASHTO T164A

Product Description

The Centrifuge Extractor serves a specific purpose related to the analysis of asphalt mixtures. Asphalt is a crucial material in constructions, and its quality directly impacts the durability and performance of roads. The Centrifuge extractor is primarly used for the determination of the bitumentcontent in asphalt mixtures. Bitumen is the binder asphalt that holds the aggregate materials together. The proportion of bitumen in an asphalt mixtures significantly affects its propoerties, including its strenght, flexibility, and resistance to environmental factor. The model now is upgraded with an ECO-SMARTZ system designed with a focus on environmental sustainability and energy efficiency. The ECO-SMARTZ Centrifuge Extractor typically incorporate various features and technologies aimed at reducing energy consumption, minimizing environmental impact, and promoting sustainable practices.

Features of Eco Smartz Centrifuge Extractor

  • Energy saving up to 70% compare with old version.
  • Stable operation with less vibration & noise.
  • Variable speed control system.
  • Brake control for fast stop.
  • Machine accepted both 1500 & 3000 gram bowl cover.

 Standard: 12697-1, ASTM D2172, AASHTO T164A

  • 12697-1

This is a European standard for the determination of bitumen content in bituminous mixtures, It provides guidelines for using a centrifuge extractor to separate bitumen from the asphalt mixtures and clarifying its content. The method outlined in EN 12697-1 is similar to ASTM D2172 and AASHTO T164A but may have some differences in procedure or equipment specifications. EN 12679-1 provides guidelines and requirements to ensure consistency and accuracy in determining bitumen content, which is crucial for assessing the quality and performance of asphalt mixtures.

  • ASTM D2172

This standard test method established by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) specifically for quantitatavely extracting bitumen from asphalt mixtures. This process entails employing a centrifuge extractor  to separate the bitumen binder from the aggregate components within the asphalt mixture. Subsequently, the amount of extracted bitumen is measured to ascertain its proportion relative to the entire mixture, usually expressed as a percentage.

  • AASHTO T164A

This is a corresponding method published by the America Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) for determining the bitumen content in asphalt mixtures. Like ASTM D2172, it specifies the procedure for using a centrifuge extractor to extract bitumen from the asphalt sample and measure its content

Test Procedure

  1. Sample Preparation: Asphalt samples are taken from construction sites or asphalt plants and prepared for testing. The samples consists of asphalt binder mixed with aggregate material such as, crushed stones, gravel and sand.
  2. Extraction: The asphalt sample is placed into a centrifuge extractor, which then spins rapidly. The centrifugal force separates the bitumen binder from the aggregate materials.
  3. Separation: As the centrifuge rotates, the denser bitumen settles at the bottom of the sample container, forming a compacted layer. Meanwhile, the lighter aggregate materials stay suspended in the liquid portion above, known as the supernatant.
  4. Measurement: After centrifugation, The bitumen pellet is carefully removed from the container, dried, and weighed. The weighed of the extracted bitumen is then used to calculate the percentage of bitumen content in the original asphalt mixture.
